Downtown San Diego is booming! Words like "cosmopolitan," "renaissance" and "revitalization" are now being used to describe the urban core. There are currently more than 100 redevelopment projects completed, underway or in the pipeline. Downtown San Diego has always been the regional center for government, finance, business and law but it is quickly becoming a 24-hour center for living, working, shopping, recreation, arts, culture and entertainment. There are currently 75 residential projects underway which will bring approximately 9,000 new units to Downtown over the next five years. There are numerous retail, commercial office and hotel developments on the horizon as well.
Each of Downtown's 8 distinct neighborhoods has blossomed into its own unique shape and character. Downtown's East Village is home to the largest redevelopment project in the City's history - the Ballpark Redevelopment project. This 26-block redevelopment project consists of hotels, retail, office buildings and residential all surrounding a new 46,000-seat ballpark for the San Diego Padres baseball club.
