DOWNTOWN ADVOCACY

One of the primary tools used to meet the Partnership's goals is advocacy. On behalf of our members and the Downtown community, the Partnership holds strategic meetings with government officials, business leaders, community organizations, the media and other opinion leaders to enhance the business environment and quality of life in Downtown San Diego. Following are some of the major areas on which the Partnership's advocacy efforts are focused:

Political Action - Represents the membership before governmental bodies on issues affecting the Downtown community.

Downtown Agency Watchdog - Monitors specific governmental entities whose operations directly affect Downtown businesses and residents.

Redevelopment - Reviews land-use and site analysis of public facilities in Downtown San Diego. Supports redevelopment that serves as a catalyst for economic growth.

Public Amenities - Promotes Downtown San Diego as the region's center for commerce and government.

Culture and Education - Supports Downtown San Diego as the center for arts and culture.

Residents' Issues - The Downtown Partnership supports policies that improve the quality of life for Downtown residents, while advocating continuous community developments in Downtown San Diego.

Safety and Social Concerns - Coordinates member efforts to improve Downtown community safety and social services.

Business Development - Promotes Downtown as a designation: build Downtown's economy by persuading existing companies to remain Downtown and attract new business to relocate Downtown.

Committee Meetings - The Downtown Partnership has several committees that bring together dedicated professionals. They help the Partnership lead the way on a wide variety of Downtown issues, including Urban Design, Safety, Transportation, Maintenance, Marketing and Promotions, Arts and Culture, and Business Development. Committees are the backbone of the Downtown Partnership, and help drive the Partnership's agenda and planning process. They are an excellent way for members to get involved.

Membership Luncheons - The Downtown Partnership features luncheon events with interesting and noteworthy speakers covering timely topics and issues facing Downtown businesses.

Membership Events - The Partnership hosts a number of specialty events such as Theatre Nights, Mixers, Padre's Games and other educational or cultural venues that give our membership a chance to socialize and participate in local activities.

Chairman's Circle, Sustaining and Corporate Member Events - The Downtown Partnership also hosts several "preferred" events for its Chairman's Circle, Sustaining and Corporate level members. Often times, these events provide direct access to local and national business and political leaders in small, intimate settings.

"The Alonzo's" Annual Downtown Partnership Awards Dinner - The Downtown Partnership Alonzo Awards honors the people, places and projects that have contributed to the advancement of Downtown in the preceding year. This formal event is our biggest event of the year with over 500 people in attendance.

Annual Golf Tournament - An exciting, fun fundraising event for members and their guests who like to challenge the local links. This event is extremely popular and offers impressive raffle prizes.

Taste of Downtown - A self-guided tour of some of Downtown's sumptuous eateries. Guests sample various cuisines and food specialties from Downtown's finest restaurants.

COMMUNICATIONS

Downtown Now! - Monthly E-newsletter – Members receive a professionally designed newsletter via e-mail each month, informing them of local issues, current events, meetings and activities Downtown. Member news is also posted in the monthly e-newsletter.

Annual Report - Each year, the Partnership publishes an annual report that outlines its operating and financial performance. It includes a list of accomplishments and a summary of activities and contributions in the community.

Downtown Partnership's Web Site - Members also receive recognition as a valued member on the Downtown Partnership web site. The Downtown Partnership posts press releases from our members, incorporates their business profile into our on-line membership database and offers a link to their company Web site.
